Tommy bought this 1976 Ford Gran Torino from the original owner in Burleson, Texas for only $900. The car had been sitting for about eight years, but with a basic tune-up and new fuel pump, he got it running perfect. It was blue with a silver S&H stripe (see below) right from the factory. It has the original 400 motor, C6 Transmission, and 9" rear end. It had 125,000 original miles on it, and factory air conditioning that still works.

The car had no major body damage or rust when Tommy bought it. He did all the necessary body work and painted the car himself in the garage at Mountain Valley Funeral Home in
Burleson, Texas where he is the funeral director, embalmer, and manager.

So far, Tommy says, everything on the car works fine including the cruise control. The interior was originally blue, but Tommy painted it black, including the headliner which still looks new. Tommy polished and re-used all the original chrome, except for the wheel well moldings because he likes the car better with them off. He did not put the Gran Torino emblems back on the sides, and filled in the mounting holes, because he didn't like those either.

Tommy found 8 1/2" slotted wheels for the back (that were given to him, free) with 275-60 tires, and he put 7" wheels on the front (that he only paid $40 for) with 215-70 tires. For the exhaust, Tommy ditched the converters and ran true dual 2" pipes with Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. He says, "This car drives like a dream and does not have any vibrations or rattles. The boy in the picture (below) is my eleven year old son who helped me all the way."

Including what he paid for the car, wheels, tires, exhaust work, supplies and paint, Tommy only has about $2,100 invested in this car - proof positive that you don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a S&H replica if you are willing to shop around and do some work yourself. Cars like this one sell for 4-5 times as much money than is actually invested in them. Great job, Tommy!
