John is only the third owner of this Gran Torino, and the first to own it as a "Starsky & Hutch"®movie replica. And when I say "movie replica" I MEAN it - this car was completely rebuilt by "Movie Mike" Walsh who built the hero cars for the 2004 movie. Other than Mike himself, John is now only the third person in the world to own a S&H Torino built by Mike (the other two people are Barry S. and the curator of a movie vehicle museum in England).

The original owner of this car bought it at a dealership in San Jose and drove it very little while he owned it. He gave the car to his nephew, who only owned it for about 8 months when the S&H movie came out in 2004. John saw the car soon after and bought it from the nephew, with the uncle's permission, for only $1,000. The car was yellow with a vinyl top but no opera windows, and had very low miles.

John brought car to Mike to give it the "Starsky" treatment. Mike warned him that because he is so busy making cars for TV shows and movies, it might take a year and a half to do this car. John said he wanted a "Movie Mike" creation and he was willing to wait for it. A year and a half later, after working on the car whenever he and his crew had spare time, Mike delivered "the longest car project [he's] ever done" to a very, VERY happy John A.

In addition to the unique "Movie Mike" Starsky stripe over beautiful Viper Red paint, this car has been totally worked over mechanically - top to bottom. On the outside, it has a little more rake than the movie cars thanks to bigger tires, station wagon springs, and air shocks in the back. To make tire switching easier during filming, the movie cars had the same size tires and "deep dish" slotted mags on both front and back. This car has 15x8.5 rims on the back and 15 x 7 on the front.

John's car has the original bench seat, but reupholstered by Mike's specialists who replicated the original material and pattern. It has new carpet and a new headliner. The steering wheel is non-stock and a little smaller than the original (at John's request).

The car's 351 cid Modified Cleveland engine now has a mild RV-type cam, Edelbrock aluminum intake and 700 cfm 4 bbl carb, MSD ignition, Hooker headers, and all new wiring in the engine compartment. The car has a new transmission with shift kit and mild stall converter, and 2 1/2" exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. Mike says it sounds great!

Mike has built six or seven Starsky Torinos now, including Movie Hero #1, Movie Hero #2, Movie Dunk Car, and the three you see in his shop in this photo. Hero #3 is in the spray booth, the middle car is one of Mike's personal collection, and the finished car is John's.

Mike is very happy with the car, and enjoyed working on a project that didn't have to be ready overnight for a movie or TV show. John is thrilled to have the car, and is already amazed at how much attention he gets when driving it. Welcome to the family of Starsky Torino owners, John!
