Joe K.'s 1976 Ford Gran Torino® |

I don't usually feature cars on this web site until they are at least painted, but I had to share this car as-is. Joe sent me the picture of his car, on the left, all sanded down to bare metal and with his stripe template stuck on it, and he said "look at how much the car looks like an Ertl Chrome Starsky Torino!" He's so right! If you haven't seen one before, I took a photo of my Ertl Chrome Starsky Torino, on the right, and pasted it into Joe's photo over top of his car. I tried to talk Joe into keeping the car this color, but it didn't work. It's fun to imagine what it would be like to have an actual running chrome Starsky Torino, isn't it? Until then, you can look for a 1/8th Scale Chrome Starsky Torino on eBay. | |||

Joe was once one of the lucky 1,000 owners of a factory
"Starsky & Hutch" Gran Torinos. It was his first new car and he had it for over 10 years until one
day, he says, he "had a brain fart and sold it." The car hadn't moved three feet when he realized he
had made a mistake, Joe said. At that time, everyone knew him by that car and he has always said that he'd have
another one someday. When that time came, he says he exhausted every lead he could to try and find his old S&H
Torino but came up empty, so he started trying to find a Torino on eBay. He bought this Gran Torino in November 2004 on eBay and had it shipped across country in an enclosed trailer from from Spokane, Washington to Ohio. The car is extremely solid, he says. There is no glass rattle when you close the doors, and they shut like new. The only rust he found when he was stripping the car, a spot smaller than a playing card, was low on the passenger front fender ahead of the rocker panel where leaves collected and rusted out the body from behind. This car still has its original factory dual exhaust. The odometer only shows 29,872 miles, but the speedometer has been disconnected for years. The gentleman Joe bought it from estimated it at under 60,000 miles based upon the other cars he has had. All in all, Joe says he's very happy with his purchase. He looks forward to having it done so he can do some car shows and cruising next year, and the rest of us look forward to joining him! |
