One day in 1975, Greg says, Aaron Spelling became upset when all three of the leased TV Show Torinos were out of commission. He ordered the studio's property manager to immediately find and prepare a backup car. Spelling reasoned that having direct control over one of the cars would help him avoid the red tape and associated delays he was experiencing with repairs on the cars leased from Ford.

Urgency motivated the property manager to move quickly in delivering a functional car to Spelling. The only option he had was a dark blue metallic 1976 Gran Torino with blue interior. He secured the car from Ford, and began the detailed conversion as soon as it was delivered. The blue interior became black. The distinctive red and white paint job was put in place, and just in case the camera might catch sight of the blue engine bay firewall, it was painted black. Finally, the 20th Century Fox asset tag was affixed behind the driver's side radiator support.

This 20th Century Fox-owned Gran Torino was used from 1976 until "Starsky and Hutch"®ceased production in 1979. The car was then sold through an auction to Michael T. in Pennsylvania. Fabulous Mustangs and Exotic Fords featured an article on the car in their September, 1985 issue highlighting Michael as the owner. Later that same year, he sold the car to Scott B. in Arizona who owned it through 1999.

Steve B. in New Jersey acquired this TV Torino in 1999 and sold it some time later to Rich M. who disassembled the car and began work restoring it. After time, however, work stopped and Steve B. bought the car back. (It was featured on this website when Steve B. owned it the first time, again under Rich's name, and again under Steve's.)

In 2010, Greg and his wife Lisa happened upon this Gran Torino through an eBay listing. Greg had the privilege of owning a Limited Production 1976 "Starsky & Hutch"®Ford Gran Torino®"back in the day," and had always hoped to find another one. Greg says, "Lisa and I share the car hobby and it didn't take a lot of discussion before she had "Starsky" fever. We made a deal with Steve and moved the car to CR Cars in Philadelphia for the restoration, which took about a year."

"The 20th Century Fox Gran Torino has a home in Oklahoma now " Greg says, "and we feel blessed to be the caretakers of this historic car." In May of 2011, just before it was featured here, Greg & Lisa entered it in a car show for the first time and it won the "Best of Show" award! Great Job, Greg & Lisa! Thanks for finally getting this car back in TV show condition and getting it the recognition it deserves!
