Chris I.'s 1974 Ford Gran Torino
Sport®
"Starsky & Hutch"®Movie
Car
|
|
|
| Chris' Torino is the one that was owned by George Barris
and used as a tow car (pulled behind a camera vehicle) in the 2004 "Starsky & Hutch"®movie.
Before Chris bought it, this car had been on display at an Automobile Museum since the movie's release. Chris modified
the hood to open toward the front in order to show off the engine, and he put a five speed stick shift in the car!
The engine is a 393 stroker, and the tranny is a 4:11 posi. Chris put on chrome wheels that have five slots similar
to the movie wheels but "won't turn gray over time like the aluminum ones do." |
|
|
| Chris says he was lucky in that the car started out
life as a Sport model, so the bucket seats, console, and dash with tach and other gauges were already there. Chris
owns a restoration shop in Chicago that restores the classic Mustang. Visit Chris' Web Site. |
|
|
| Chris says this car was not "show quality"
when he bought it, and he "went a little overboard with the details" by removing the body from the frame
and continuing the red and white paint theme under
the car! |

| The 2004 Warner Brothers "Starsky & Hutch"
movie's hero cars & dunk car were built by "Movie Mike" Walsh of Premiere Studio Rentals, and the
jump & stunt cars were built by Ray Claridge of Cinema Vehicle Services. Also used in the movie were a 1973
Torino body mounted on the Mic Rig, and this 1974 Gran Torino which was used as a tow car (pulled behind a camera
vehicle) which was owned by George Barris at the time. Mr. Barris owns the copyright on the original TV show cars,
but I have not seen any historic documents that indicate that he had anything to do with building them. Mr. Barris
has built a lot of very famous movie and TV show cars, though, including the original Batmobile! Read about the Building of the Original TV Show Torinos. |
